Extremely Rare Miniature Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Monday January the 27 yer(sic) 18.77," attributed to the Swank Pottery, Johnstown, PA, 1877, thin-walled, ovoid pitcher, brush-decorated across the midsection with a sweeping stem bearing two tulip blossoms. Dash decoration to collar and U-shaped highlight to spout. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Incised across base of collar, "January the 27 yer(sic) 1877." Additionally incised on the underside with the date, "18,77." Delicately thrown, decorated, and inscribed, this work ranks among the best miniatures and pitchers known from this famous Western Pennsylvania pottery. Professionally restored handle. Some paint on exterior of rim above handle suggests there is a very shallow, restored flake there, which does not extend through to interior. Minor chipping to spout and rim. A small, smooth in-the-firing base chip. H 3 1/4".
