Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and tooling to midsection and shoulder, brush-decorated from top to bottom with freehand stripes, an undulating fuchsia vine, and a large scrolled "2" flanked by groups of straight and wavy stripes. Strong brushwork showcasing the talent of Western Pennsylvania stoneware decorators. A 5" Y-shaped crack on underside, forming a sealed curving crack on proper right side of jar, extending 9 1/2" from base to shoulder. An additional thin diagonal crack extending from base to shoulder on front. H 12 1/8".
