Very Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "John L. Haught / & Co. / Shinnston W. Va.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with freehand stripes and vining above the stenciled maker's mark, "John L. Haught / & Co. / Shinnston. W.Va." Stenciled "6" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The only example of stoneware bearing this specific stencil that we have offered. Excellent condition with two in-the-firing base chips and minor surface wear, the proper right handle with two minor chips and a 2" horizontal surface-level line along its edge. H 16 1/2".
