Exceptional Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration and Applied Rings, Western PA origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and small, rounded lug handles, the front and reverse decorated with unusual hand-modeled and applied clay rings; brush-decorated on the front with an elaborate flowering plant featuring two drooping blossoms flanking a smaller bud and tassel-shaped blossom. Further decorated around the body with a Germanic tulip and spotted flowering plants. Applied rings and handles decorated with slip-trailed spots and brushed highlights. Freehand stripe to shoulder and base. An outstanding, imaginatively decorated example. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor in-the-firing contact mark to bottom edge of jar and small chips to interior of rim. H 9 1/8".
