Extremely Rare and Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Two-Color-Slip Stenciled Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, vasiform pitcher with flaring collar and subtly-formed spout, decorated in brown slip with a stenciled daisy surrounded by an olive-green vine border, all against a cream-colored, alkaline-glazed ground. Among the best examples of Whelchel family stoneware that we have seen, this pitcher is the first example that we have offered featuring this color combination; of note, this is also the first example we have handled incorporating the color green. Wear to spout and a few spots of wear to rim. Otherwise excellent condition. Unusually strong condition for this maker. H 9".
