Exceptional Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Banding, Edgefield District, SC origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with shoulder molding, slightly flared rim, and flattened lug handles, decorated around the body with four bands of triply-incised lines. Four incised vertical slash marks at base. Surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze. Though found on a number of North Carolina stoneware pieces, the incised banding on this Edgefield example is highly unusual for pieces of this origin. Thin crack across underside, extending a short distance onto base, including a flake to underside. H 15".
