Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware South Carolina Dispensary Jug, Stamped "S.C. DISPENSARY," attributed to the J. G. Baynham Pottery, Trenton, Edgefield District, SC, late 19th century, cylindrical jug with dramatically-tapered, rounded shoulder and semi-squared spout, the surface covered in a mottled olive-green alkaline glaze. Impressed on reverse of jug with an image of a palmetto tree flanked by the initials "S C" above the word, "DISPENSARY." The South Carolina Dispensary system required the state's citizens to purchase their liquor only through state-run facilities. This failed experiment lasted from 1893 to 1907 and continued in some counties until 1916, with alkaline-glazed and Bristol-glazed stoneware as well as glass bottles bearing "S C DISPENSARY" marks produced during this period. Relatively few examples from the Baynham pottery have survived, this jug noteworthy for its fine condition. A small spout chip. Some surface wear to reverse. H 11".
