Small-Sized Glazed Stoneware Toby Pitcher, Stamped "AMERICAN POTTERY, CO. / JERSEY CITY, N.J.," circa 1840-1845, molded pitcher with paneled sides, the collar and rim in the form of a molded man's face with tricorn hat, the handle with foliate thumb rest; exterior surface covered in a brown glaze, the interior coated in a clear glaze over a cream ground. Underside impressed with circular American Pottery Company maker's mark. The design for this pitcher was created by English-born modeler, Daniel Greatbach. A closely related example resides in the Brooklyn Museum, a gift of noted collector, Arthur Clement. Excellent condition with a small base chip, which appears to be in-the-firing. H 5 3/4".
