Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "ITHACA, N.Y.", third quarter 19th century, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flared rim, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a bird with tall crest and turned head, perched on a flowering branch accented with spots. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. A restored curving crack extending from rim to midsection on front. White residue on interior (either water glass or paint) as well as a curved, in-the-firing clay separation on underside, not visible on interior, and some glazed-over lines on interior, not visible on exterior.
