Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Southern U.S. origin, second half 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled shoulder, the surface covered in a glossy, olive-colored alkaline glaze. Incised "4" at shoulder. Bottom edge with a large in-the-firing flake and other smaller in-the-firing chips. A large piece of adhered clay to one side. Light surface wear. A few in-the-firing fissures to underside. A few spout chips. H 16".
