Scarce and Fine Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Albany, NY area, circa 1805, ovoid jug with footed base and tooled, semi-squared spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with fanned tail and impressed circular eye, perched on a stylized leaf. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Strong decoration and exceptional color. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Chips and calcium residue to base. A tight 3" crack on underside, ascending 6" up reverse. An additional 2 1/2" diagonal line extends off from this crack at base on reverse. A short spider line to shoulder on jug's proper left side, possibly in-the-firing. Some typical in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 14".
