Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar, Stenciled "THE GALLOWAY JAR / Pat.Feb.8.&Apr.5.1870," probably Western PA origin, circa 1880, barrel-form canning jar with recessed "wax sealer" rim, featuring "THE GALLOWAY JAR" stenciled advertising surrounding a foliate motif. Original piercings in shoulder for wire handle holding lid. Galloway jars are typically found with impressed advertising from a different origin. This jar is the first of its type that we have offered. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. A 3/4" in-the-firing base chip and small glazed-over, in-the-making dent to base. A chip to piercing on interior of rim. A 3/4" in-the-firing fissure to interior of rim. H 6 1/8".
