Rare Stoneware Handled Canning Jar, Inscribed "Peaches" in Cobalt, probably Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV or possibly OH origin, circa 1870, tapering jar with inner "wax sealer" rim and applied handle, featuring the cobalt inscription, "Peaches." Albany-slip-glazed interior. Lesser-seen form with rare fruit name inscription. Literature: A possibly-related stoneware canning jar bearing the cobalt inscription, "Thompson / Morgantown / 1869" is illustrated in Duez, Horvath, and Heindl, "The Stoneware Years of the Thompson Potters of Morgantown, West Virginia, 1854-1890," Ceramics in America 2011, fig. 19. Excellent condition with a small rim chip and two minor rim nicks. H 10 3/4".
