Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Gamebird Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER JR. / ROCHESTER.N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head, raised leg, and heavy feather detail throughout, standing on a leaf. Slip-trailed "4" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. A thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on front. An approximately 1 1/4" surface line adjoining it at rim, which does not extend through to interior. A thin 3" crack from rim on proper left side of churn. Wear around inner rim for lid. A 3" Y-shaped surface line to midsection of proper right side of churn, which does not extend through to interior. Some light staining. Shallow chipping and edge wear to lid.
