Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and robust extruded handles with heavy ribbing, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a diagonal spotted tulip motif in Bell's distinctive style. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed below one handle with John Bell maker's mark. Very nice condition with generally minor flaws. A small rim chip and small, glazed-over rim chip. A few narrow in-the-firing contact marks to body of jar. A minor base chip. A shallow 1 1/8" in-the-firing flake (stacker mark) to underside. Rim is slightly out-of-round. H 13 1/2".
