Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird and Floral Decorations, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & CO. / GEDDES, N.Y.," circa 1850, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a heavily-detailed bird, perched on a looping flourish emanating with two large, striped daisy blossoms. Slip-trailed "4" on opposing side of bird above a looping flourish. This jar's wonderful form, larger size, and extravagant use of cobalt, place it among the rarer examples of Farrar's slip-trailed bird motif that we have offered. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Rim is slightly out-of-round. Areas of fry to cobalt. A small in-the-firing ping to rim on reverse. A minor chip to interior of rim. Light staining throughout. Proper left handle with minor in-the-firing flaws including small glazed-over chip. Some smooth salt residue to base of jar's proper left side. H 12" ; W (at rim) 12 1/4".
