Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "HUBELL & CHESEBRO / GEDDES, N.Y.," circa 1867-1887, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with spotted and striped body, trotting along a stylized ground with two palm-like trees. Impressed with two cobalt-highlighted five-gallon capacity marks flanking the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark. A prized Northeastern stoneware motif related to Burger family designs from Rochester, New York. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. A 7" inverted Y-shaped line to front. A sealed, top-to-bottom Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. Rim chips including a 1 5/8" flake to interior of rim. Areas of reddish staining to surface. H 12 1/4".
