Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse Head Decoration, Stamped "W . HART. / OGDENSBURGH," NY State origin, circa 1858-1869, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a horse's head with flowing mane a bridle, underscored by a looping flourish. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Fry to cobalt. A thin 4 1/4" crack from rim on front. A 1" rim chip on reverse with an approximately 7 1/2" crack descending from it. An additional 2 1/2" line from rim on reverse. Copper wire around shoulder. A small chip and minor wear to interior of rim. Some exfoliation and an in-the-firing iron ping to proper right side of crock's front. Minor scattered exfoliation elsewhere. H 9 1/4".
