Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "WHITE'S UTICA.," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jug with tapered spout molding, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, standing on a stylized ground between a pine tree and shrub. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few deer decorations from this pottery are known. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Fry to cobalt. Two spout chips. A 2 1/2" faint, inverted Y-shaped line to shoulder. An in-the-firing contact mark, including a chip, on reverse. Some mottling to clay. H 14".
