Four-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with applied lug handles, tooled shoulder, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed floral spray accented with spots. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes salt-glazed lid, possibly original to the jar. Excellent condition with some minor in-the-firing surface flaws and minor staining. Minor chips to inner rim for lid. Lid with a thin 2 1/2" crack and a 1 3/8" in-the-firing flake to edge of lid. H (excluding lid) 14".
