Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, ovoid jar of unusual bowl-shaped form with applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a scrolled branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. A 2 1/2" x 3/4" flake to underside at edge. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing iron ping to underside. Light staining to surface. H 8 7/8" ; Diam. (at rim) 11 5/8".
