Rare Tanware Jar with Albany Slip Drape Decoration, Stamped "LEWISTOWN / POTTERY.," John H. Dipple, Lewistown, PA, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated around the bottom third in metallic, reddish-brown slip with a scalloped drape design. Additional Albany slip highlights to rim and interior. Literature: A closely-related jar is illustrated in Lasansky, Made of Mud, p. 16. Wear to interior of rim. Two faint hairlines from rim on front, measuring 4 1/4" and 4". In-the-firing contact marks to bottom edge, including a shallow 1" in-the-firing flake. H 6 3/4".
