Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with spotted wing and long, solid-cobalt tail, standing on a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. Very nice condition with minor flaws. A 2" hairline from rim to proper left side of jar's front. A small chip to proper right handle. Two minor nicks to proper left handle. Some light wear to cobalt. Minor water glass residue to front and minor old blue paint residue to reverse. H 9 3/4".
