Fine and Scarce Small-Sized Stoneware Spittoon with Cobalt Dragonfly Motif, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical form with coved walls, footed, recessed circular opening in top, and carved oval opening at shoulder, brush-decorated around its circumference with four abstract diagonal designs resembling dragonflies. Brushed tulip around opening at shoulder. Among the smallest Cowden & Wilcox spittoons that we have ever offered, this example includes unusual brushwork and strong color. Provenance: Roan Auction; Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some in-the-firing flaws. Two shallow, glazed-over rim chips. A small, glazed-over C-shaped line in rim. A small in-the-firing base chip. A few short, glazed-over lines to base area.A salt drip to one side. Diam. 6 5/8" ; H 3 3/4".
