Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Two Incised Slash Marks, attributed to David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, rotund jar with raised lug handle and rounded rim, the surface covered in a mottled brown alkaline glaze. Incised with two slash marks at shoulder, a hallmark associated with Drake's production, as well as four punctates, denoting four gallons. Provenance: Richard and Cindy Pearce Collection. Two small drilled holes in underside. A thin, approximately 5 1/2" Y-shaped crack in underside, which includes a thin 11 1/4" crack extending up front. A minor chip to reverse end of proper right handle. A few minor base nicks. Some grease residue to surface. H 14".
