Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Pottersville Stoneware Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1825, squat-shaped jar with thin, semi-rounded rim, the surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze over light-gray clay. Presumably the work of a potter-in-training, this jar is unusually heavy and thick-walled. Two groups of deeply-depressed finger marks on the interior reveal the potter's attempt at shaping the vessel. Jar is relatively small, measuring one gallon or less. Provenance: Richard and Cindy Pearce Collection. Some in-the-firing clay residue to surface. An inverted Y-shaped surface line descending from rim to shoulder, not visible on interior. A network of lines to one side, partially visible on interior, connecting to hairlines on underside. A few minor rim nicks. H 8 1/4".
