Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glaze Stoneware Jar with Heart Stamp, attributed to the Reverend John Landrum Pottery, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1810-1830, highly-ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and flattened tab handles, the surface covered in an opaque greenish alkaline glaze with brown mottling. Impressed at shoulder with a raised heart within an oval along with two impressed dashes below. Wahler wrote the following in her notes with regard to this piece: "This is the only stamp with a heart known. Steve Ferrell maybe knows of another." Provenance: Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society, Bennett, NC. A 6 1/2" sealed inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on front. An 8" sealed spider crack from rim on front. A 7" sealed crack from rim on reverse. A 3" line ascending base on reverse. A 3 3/4" Y-shaped line ascending base on front, extending a short distance onto underside. A thin 6" crack ascending base on front, extending a short distance onto underside. Heavy exfoliation to underside. Flakes to body, one of which is partially filled with adhesive. Various short, tight lines to body. Flakes to interior. Shallow chipping around bottom edge. A 1" chip to proper right handle. H 13 1/2".
