Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Deer and House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large stag with spotted body and turned head, reclining atop a hill beside a tree stump, with large mansion and pine tree in the distance and split-rail fence in the foreground. Various stylized shrubs accent the ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This work's large size and combination of an array of desirable Norton design elements place it among the best Norton pieces with single deer decoration that we have ever offered. Provenance: James Chebalo Collection. Chips to interior of rim. Otherwise minor flaws: a minor chip and tiny nick to proper left handle; two minor chips and a tiny nick to proper right handle; a 3" x 2 1/8" X-shaped surface line to midsection on reverse, not visible on interior; exfoliation to Albany slip on interior base; and some light staining to exterior and minor water glass staining to interior. H 13".
