Exceptional Early-Period Stoneware Face Jug with Blue Glaze, Stamped Three Times "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, NC," early fourth quarter 20th century, large-sized, ovoid jug with flared spout and two open handles, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including melted "weeping" eyes set within strap-like lids, incised eyebrows, angular ears, nose with carved nostrils, and open mouth with incised mustache and two rows of broken china teeth. Surface covered in a dramatic blackish glaze with opaque blue streaks throughout. Underside impressed three times with Burlon B. Craig maker's mark. This jug's extraordinary combination of several desirable attributes, including its rare and attractive glaze, weeping eyes, large size, and early-period application of two rows of teeth, distinguish it as the finest face vessel that we have ever offered by this potter. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few firing fissures to handles as well as some in-the-firing roughness to base. H 19 1/2".
