Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Stamped "H.F. REINHARDT / VALE, N.C.," second quarter 20th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and flared spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including large ears with raised edge, two-tone eyes placed within protruding lids, eyebrows, Roman nose with carved nostrils, flattened mustache, and broad mouth with numerous applied china teeth. Surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze. Reverse impressed at base with Harvey Reinhardt maker's mark. Few face vessels from this influential North Carolina potter are known. Provenance: Recently discovered in the Southern U.S. Excellent condition with a small spout chip, a tiny nick to one ear (possibly in-the-making), and extremely minor wear and residue to surface. Underside with traces of old red paint. H 7 3/8".
