Very Unusual Stoneware Pitcher with Three-Color Slip Decoration, probably Great Wagon Road, Virginia or Tennessee, mid 19th century, one-gallon baluster-form pitcher with heavily-tooled rim and ribbed handle, bearing a light salt glaze over highly-unusual three-color slip decoration of stylized flowering plant beneath dashes and accents. The yellow, reddish-purple, and blue-green slips are possibly made up of copper, manganese, and cobalt respectively. Discovered near Kingsport, TN, we believe this crude example of stoneware was probably manufactured locally. U-shaped section comprising roughly front half of rim and spout broken and reglued with splintered losses. Crack extending across most of base and up front of pitcher, traveling in three sections roughly 10" horizontally and 5" vertically. Minor chips, firing flaws, and surface wear. H 9 3/4".
