Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. &. E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of an open-handled basket brimming with flowers, leaves, scrolled stems, and dotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable motif, applied in exceptionally strong cobalt slip. A very faint 6" vertical line to right of decoration adjoining some faint crazing at base. Chipping around interior of rim and inner rim for lid. Some light staining to base on front and staining to shoulder on reverse. A chip to reverse end of one handle. What appears to be a thin horizontal crack at the base is actually an incised line created during the making. H 13 1/4".
