Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Decoration, Inscribed "Whately Mass / M. Crafts / C. Crafts," Martin Crafts and Caleb Crafts, Whately, MA, circa 1825, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated at the shoulder with incised wing-like designs beside the inverted incised signature, "Whately Mass / M. Crafts / C. Crafts." Few examples of hand-signed Whately pottery have survived. The jug's inscription indicates it was made by Martin Crafts and his uncle, Caleb Crafts, prior to the former's establishment of a pottery in Portland, Maine in 1833. A significant document-in-clay of early Massachusetts stoneware. Excellent condition with some very old reddish-brown residue to spout and a flake to interior wall of spout. H 11".
