Extremely Rare Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Animal Decoration, Albany, NY area, early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, brush-decorated with a design of a running animal atop a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The subject matter and brushed cobalt application of the design are nearly unprecedented for the time period in which this jug was made. Literature: Illustrated in Hartmann, "The Stoneware of Early Albany: A Mystery Solved," Ceramics in America 2012, fig. 12. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Heavy chipping to base. A hairline at base of handle. A second hairline partway up handle from base, which does not extend completely through handle. H 10 1/2".
