Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Bangor, ME Advertising, Dated "1840," Gardiner, ME origin, 1840, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring the brushed cobalt date, "1840," with stripe below. Impressed above with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "[W]HITTIER & GUILD / DEALERS IN / DRUGS, PAINTS, DYE STUFFS, / BANGOR." Unusual advertising with desirable freehand date. Excellent condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to top of spout and light staining. H 11".
