Scarce Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring and Floral Decorations, Manhattan, NY origin, third quarter 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a fan-shaped floral motif descending from the rim featuring scrolled "watch spring" motifs incorporated into the stem. Unusual abstract cobalt decoration to base area on one side. Cobalt band around shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Four filled chips to exterior of rim. A few very minor unfilled chips to exterior of rim. Small chips and wear to interior of rim. A filled 3/4" surface chip to shoulder. Opposite side with an in-the-firing contact mark including an adhered piece of clay. Filled section to the jar's foot. A thin 1 3/4" crack on underside, continuing approximately 2" up base. An approximately 6" tight, vertical crack and crazing, both to base area below one handle. H 12 1/4".
