Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two flowers emanating from a cluster of stylized vines or grasses. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Relatively few examples of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware are decorated with a slip cup. Desirable size. Two rim chips. A minor chip to one handle. A small in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder on front. Staining to surface. H 10 1/4".
