Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with two rows of incised banding to upper body, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing three flowers and numerous graduated leaves. Swag decoration above vine and at base. Freehand stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Decoration is applied over a slip-coated surface. Impressed four-gallon capacity mark on reverse. One handle professionally-restored. Chips and wear to opposite handle. Some in-the-firing clay residue below chipped handle. A few in-the-firing pings to surface. Light surface wear. A thin Y-shaped crack across underside, not visible on interior. H 14 1/2".
