Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK JR. / ATHENS N Y," mid 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a ring-necked bird with crest and turned head, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes salt-glazed Northeastern U.S. lid, possibly original to the jar. A large in-the-making flake to underside with a 3" hairline extending from it across underside. Some restoration to left and right of bird's tail. A filled line through bottom of bird's tail. Some restoration to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. A few minor unrestored nicks to inner rim for lid. Spots of restoration to fry on cobalt. Lid with two lines and two small in-the-firing contact marks. H 11 1/4".
