Outstanding Slip-Decorated Redware Sugar Bowl, Mid-Atlantic or Southern U.S. origin, possibly Peter Bell, Winchester, VA or Hagerstown, MD, circa 1815-1825, ovoid form with footed base, applied strap handles, and short, vertical rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a "fish scale" or "grape cluster" motif in slip-trailed white, copper, and manganese slip. Bottom half of jar decorated with circumferential white-slip lines surmounted by unusual yellow-slip swags. Handles decorated with copper and white slip swags along with yellow-slip swags below. Interior and exterior coated in a clear lead glaze. The profuse application of slip on this example, executed in four different colors, is noteworthy. Provenance: Jeffrey S. Evans and Associates, June 2013. Chipping to base. Wear to slip. A few minor chips to horizontal rim molding and wear to rim and handles. Exfoliation to interior base and some scratches to interior wall. H 5" ; Diam. (at rim) 7 1/4".
