Very Fine Redware Sugar Bowl with Profuse Three-Color Slip Decoration, Mid-Atlantic or Southern U.S. origin, possibly Peter Bell, Winchester, VA or Hagerstown, MD, circa 1815-1825, ovoid form with footed base, tooled body, and open strap handles, the lead-glazed surface extravagantly-decorated in slip-trailed yellow-and-brown slips with "fish scale" or "grape cluster" motifs descending from the shoulder and ascending from the base. Brushed copper-slip swags fill the space between these designs. Among the most heavily-decorated American redware sugar bowls that we have seen. One handle restored. Heavy chipping to base. A faint 3/4" hairline from rim. Light wear to rim and raised moldings at shoulder. Wear to slip. H 3 3/4" ; Diam. (of rim) 4".
