Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "PAUL : CUSHMANS," Albany, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, and arched lug handles, featuring the large coggled mark of pottery owner, Paul Cushman, brushed over in cobalt slip. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Heavy chipping to base. A long horizontal crack at base, which includes two small chips on interior along this crack. A 7" vertical Y-shaped crack ascending base on reverse. A deep 1 3/8" in-the-firing chip to side of jar. Two small rim chips. Typical iron pings to surface, including a raised piece of iron at shoulder on reverse. A small in-the-firing contact mark below maker's mark. H 12 3/4".
