Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, featuring a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a stump with stylized ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Two small spout chips and a minor spout nick. A 2 3/4" salt drip to right side. Edge of handle with a tiny chip and a 1 1/8" line extending through it. Old paint residue to surface. In-the-firing, glazed-over lines to base area. Minor chipping to base. A 1" in-the-firing contact mark to left side of decoration. Spots of minor surface wear to jug's left side. H 14 1/2".
