Exceedingly Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Doll's Head with Painted Surface, Inscribed "Anna Pottery / 1885," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, 1885, finely-molded bust of a young girl with flowing hair, wearing a bonnet with bow. Dentile incising to reverse edge of bonnet. Surface decorated with white, magenta, pink, light brown, and dark brown paint over a salt-glazed ground. Two original holes bored in the clay on the front and back prior to the firing allow the head to be attached to a cloth body. Incised on underside "Anna Pottery / 1885." Believed to be one of two Anna Pottery doll's heads known, and the only one of its type, the other being molded in the form a boy's head. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Nov. 1 2008, lot 2. Chips to base.
