Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "A. CONRAD / SHINNSTON, W.VA," circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a freehand stripe and stenciled 5 above A. Conrad maker's stenciling and various stenciled floral and foliate motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A tight X-shaped line to underside, including one line extending a short distance onto base on front. A small chip to one handle. Surface wear to shoulder area on reverse and some light surface wear to front. An in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder area on reverse. H 15 3/8".
