One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising for Demuth's Snuff, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "DEMUTH'S / CELEBRATED / SNUFF / ESTABLISHED / 1770 / LANCASTER, PA." Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Very nice condition with a small rim chip on reverse, two small flakes to inner rim for lid, a minor in-the-firing flake to interior of rim, and a 1/2" line to exterior of rim on right side. Traces of old green paint to underside. Minor traces of old red paint above the "D" in "DEMUTH'S." H 9 1/4".
