One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE, NICHOLS & CO. / Williamsport, PA," circa 1875, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, applied clay ears with wood-and-wire bail handle, and handle at base on reverse; brush-decorated on the front and reverse hanging, carrot-shaped floral motifs composed of conjoined, graduated strokes. Wreath-like brushwork to base of spout. Cobalt highlights to clay tabs and handle terminals at base. Includes tin lid and spout cover. Spout with a loss and small chip. A chip to handle at base on reverse. Small rim chips. A 2 3/4" hairline on underside extending 4 1/2" up left side of pail. A diagonal 3 1/4" surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. A small amount of old orange paint to rim. H 10 1/4".
