Exceptional Redware Wing-Handled Urn with Bold Copper Glaze Decoration, Stamped "J. EBERLY & CO / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1890, ovoid form with heavily-tooled shoulder and flared rim with coggled edge, the handles molded in the form of oval wings with raised circular details; urn's surface dipped in cream-colored slip and lavishly-decorated around its circumference with wide lead-and-copper-glazed stripes. A lighter, yellowish-glazed stripe appears at the shoulder. One handle features the darker and lighter glaze treatment above and below. Impressed with J. Eberly & Co. maker's mark near midsection. Among the finest-decorated Eberly slip-washed urns known, this work is noteworthy for its prolific application of copper glaze. The vessel's striking striped design is exceedingly rare, atypical of the Eberly style as well as the greater Strasburg aesthetic, and creates a powerful image set against the urn's classical form. The urn's original drain hole was widened at some point in its use and then later filled and restored. Chips around base. Areas of slip/glaze wear to surface. A minor chip to one handle. Wear to rim area. Shallow chips to rim. Damage of this type is common (and usually more significant) for this form given its intended use outdoors. H 14 1/2".
