Rare and Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS," NY State origin, circa 1860, ovoid churn with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a long-necked bird perched in the crook of a tree stump emanating with leafy branches. Scalloped ground below. Slip-trailed "6" above. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable maker, form, and size, featuring an outstanding decoration distinctive to this maker. A cooler bearing this motif resides in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Professionally-restored cracks to base area. A Y-shaped crack to underside. A slender surface flake to shoulder. A 1 5/8" area of shallow chipping to interior of rim. A few other minor chips to interior of rim. A small chip to inner rim for lid. H 19 1/2".
