Auction Highlight: November 2, 2013 Auction | NY State Stoneware
Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Cresent Moon Face Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS," New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a man-in-the-moon surrounded by eight heavily-detailed rays. Slip-trailed "4" above. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A number of variations on Thompson Harrington's popular starface design exist. This crock is the first example we have seen incorporating a man-in-the-moon design. Some fairly unobtrusive, small sealed flakes to upper left shoulder. Otherwise excellent condition with some staining and a miniscule nick to one handle and base.
